The tracker focuses on IP barriers to COVID-19 technologies and South Africa’s attempts to address these. It was commissioned as part of a larger study aimed at advocating for IP reform in South Africa – and building public awareness and a voice on this issue. The slow pace of patent law reform in SA is a matter of urgent priority. We need to ensure greater equity in accessing COVID-19 technologies – and beyond these, all the essential medicines and devices needed within the South African health system as it prepares to implement a National Health Insurance scheme.
